On November 28, 2022, the Ministry of Electronic Information (Meity) of India held a seminar on updating the standards of information technology, audio-visual equipment and communication equipment. The seminar mainly covers the following four topics:
1. A new safety requirement IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1): 2018 will be issued;
2. Add EMI/EMC test requirements;
3. Mobile device security guidelines/instructions will be issued;
4. It is proposed to issue a separate product category for AR/VR/MR devices.
Review and summary of workshop contents
01 IS/IEC62368 (Part 1): 2018 will be released
IS/IEC 62368: Part 1:2018 will replace IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 and IS 616:2017 currently in operation. Meity provides manufacturers with a 2-year transition period, and the specific implementation rules will be released by Meity.
02 Meity proposes to add EMI/EMC test requirements
Meity plans to increase EMI/EMC testing requirements for mobile phones, laptops/laptops/tablets, printers, microwave ovens, induction cookers and rice cookers.
03 Mobile device security guidelines/instructions will be issued
So far, most smartphones in India are pre installed with Apps/Bloatware, which may cause serious privacy/information security problems. Meity will issue guidelines according to IS 17737 (Part 3): 2021 (Mobile Device Security - 3 Security Level) issued by BIS.
04 Release separate product categories for AR/VR/MR devices to comply with IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1): 2018
With the rapid development of technology. AR (augmented reality) devices, VR (virtual reality earphones), MR (mixed reality), XR (extended reality), IoT devices are popular in the market. These devices are currently classified as visual display devices or automatic data processors, but such classification may lead to ambiguity. As discussed at the meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee, Meity will issue a separate product category for AR/VR/MR equipment to comply with IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1): 2018.
