On February 25, 2022, the third edition of UL1973 was officially released, and the content has been greatly updated. UL1973 is the safety standard for energy storage battery systems in North America, and it is also a dual national standard for the United States and Canada. This standard mainly covers various battery systems used for stationary, vehicle auxiliary power, LER, photovoltaic, wind energy, backup power, and communication base stations, and includes structural evaluation and test evaluation of energy storage systems, but this standard is only a safety standard , excluding performance and reliability assessments.
01 The UL1973 standard covers the following application types of batteries
1. Energy storage: photovoltaic power station, wind power station, UPS, household energy storage, etc.
2. Vehicle auxiliary battery (excluding power battery)
3. Battery pack for light rail or fixed rail energy storage system
4. Unlimited chemical substances
● Including all kinds of batteries, chemical substances are not limited, including secondary lithium batteries, valve-regulated lead-acid, nickel batteries, beta sodium batteries and fluid batteries, etc.
● Battery and electrochemical capacitor hybrid system
02 UL1973:2022 major changes
◆ Added the requirements for transformers in Clause 7.7, which need to add random tests or meet the relevant UL standard certification;
◆ The requirements for secondary lithium batteries have been deleted to comply with the requirements of UL1642, which means that secondary lithium batteries must meet the Annex E test of UL1973
◆ Added requirements for reused batteries and battery packs, which must meet UL1974
◆ Added Clause 16 high rate charging, basically consistent with IEC62619 test
◆ Added Clause 18 Discharge Overload, Clause 26.6 Low Voltage Transformer Evaluation, and Added EMC Test
◆ Added Clause 27 Electromagnetic Immunity Test EMI: IEC 61000-4 series consistent with UL 9540 requirements
03 Annex E test items include:
1. External short circuit
2. Overcharge
3. Extrusion
4. Impact
5. Impact
6. Vibration
7. Heating
8. Temperature cycle
9. Low pressure (high analog)
10. Combustion injection
