    [Focus] Requirements and content of the new version of IEC 62619:2022, the energy storage battery standard

    IEC Battery Technical Committee TC 21/SC 21A published the second edition of IEC 62619:2022 on 24 May 2022. Compared with the 2017 version, the detailed changes in the new version are shown in the table below. For changes to the new version, manufacturers need to pay special attention to the following changes, which need to be considered in the early design and development process:

    1. New requirements for moving parts;

    2. Additional hazardous live parts requirements;

    3. Additional battery system design requirements;

    4. Added system lock requirements;

    5. New EMC requirements;

    6. Additional laser triggers the spreading process.

    Laser Triggered Spreading Process

    1. Cell preparation test

    (1) Fully charge the battery according to the method specified by the manufacturer

    (2) Place a thermocouple on the surface of the cell

    (3) Fixed cell

    (4) Determine the laser irradiation plan

    (5) Prepare equipment such as cell temperature measurement

    (6) Set the ambient temperature to 25℃±5℃

    (7) Irradiate the battery with a laser at a certain point and measure the temperature of the battery until the end of the observation

    (8) Turn off the laser when it is observed that the temperature rises rapidly due to the thermal runaway of the cell

    (9) Continue to observe the cell temperature and appearance until the temperature drops to a safe operating range

    (10) View temperature curve to confirm thermal runaway

    (11) The cell prediction shall be repeated 3 times, and if thermal runaway is confirmed in each test under the same conditions, the battery system spread test shall be carried out under the same irradiation conditions

    2. Battery system test

    (1) Fully charge the battery system according to the manufacturer's recommended conditions

    (2) Place a thermocouple on the surface of the cell

    (3) Fix the battery system on the test bench, and the irradiation point on the target cell should be the same or similar to that of the preliminary test

    (4) Prepare and set up equipment for battery system temperature test etc.

    (5) Determine the laser irradiation plan

    (6) Set the ambient temperature to 25 ℃ ± 5 ℃

    (7) Irradiate the target cell with a laser at a certain point and continuously measure the temperature of the monitored cell

    (8) When it is observed that the temperature rises rapidly due to the thermal runaway of the cell, turn off the laser

    (9) Observe and measure the cell temperature and the appearance of the battery system for at least 1 hour
